What started off with a torrential downpour ended in a blaze of glory, as May 2008 turned into Denmark's sunniest month since record keeping began in 1920.
A total of 347 hours of sunlight had been recorded by the time the sun set on Saturday.
The record was officially broken on Friday, when 332 hours of sunlight had been tallied, eclipsing the previous record, set in 1947, by two hours.
May began with heavy rains, but the month ended in style on Saturday, adding 15 hours of cloudless sunshine to its all time high.
Although the shone an average of 11 hours, 12 minutes per day last month, the month was far from attaining the maximum 505 hours of sunlight possible during the month of May.
December is the month with the fewest possible number of sunny hours, with a theoretical maximum of 221. December is also the month in which the fewest number of sunny hours was recorded: in December 1959 the sun shone for a grand total of eight hours.
Meteorologists at Denmark's Meteorological Institute say that even though summer 1947 was warm, sunny and dry, it is impossible to predict if summer 2008 will follow the same pattern.
'We'll just have to wait and see,' said meteorologist Jesper Eriksen.
