The national charitable collection day, Danmarks Indsamling, secured a record amount of money at the weekend, with more than 130 million kroner going to alleviating African poverty and helping the Haitian earthquake victims.
The annual event is jointly organised by 12 aid organisations to raise funds for African projects. In 2008, the collection raised 56 million kroner, but the addition of fundraising for Haiti more than doubled that amount this year.
The organisers say that the first portion of funds raised this year will already be distributed to the aid organisations during this week.
‘We have arranged with TDC (telephone services provider) that 50 percent of the money donated by phone will be paid out immediately. Normally we wait until people pay their telephone bill, but this time we can send off the first lot of money immediately,’ spokesman Mogens Damgaard said.
Damgaard added that he expects most of the organisations will likely divert the first funds to Haiti where the need is more urgent, but that African projects will not lose out as a result.
‘There’s nearly twice as much money raised as last year, so we’ll be able to get just as much money to Africa as expected, and also be able to contribute to Haiti. The projects for African women are also of a more long-term nature,’ he said.
The collection culminated in a televised live show on public broadcaster DR on Saturday night, where well-known politicians and entertainers manned the telethon hotlines and music and comedy stars entertained the masses.
DR’s youth radio station P3 also organised a marathon collection effort from its temporary glass fronted studio on Højbro Plads Square in the city centre. Four hosts broadcast non-stop for four days, while volunteers raised funds outside.
International and Danish artists such as the Stereophonics, OK GO, The Blue Van and Outlandish performed free concerts on the nearby stage and in the studio to help raise additional funds for the collection.
