The Metro transport system’s new line extension to Copenhagen’s airport will open a month earlier than planned
The new Metro underground extension to Copenhagen International Airport will open a month ahead of schedule, reported Berlingske Tidende newspaper Friday.
The Ørestad Development Corporation, the company that operates the Metro, announced the news after the completion of tests of the rails. The new stretch will be open for passengers on 28 September.
‘It’s very satisfying that we’re able to open the third stage of the Metro ahead of schedule and within the budget,’ said Jens Kramer Mikkelsen, the corporation’s managing director. ‘The Metro has proved to be a safe and fast form of transportation, and with the new extension residents now have quick access to Amager, Strandparken beach and the airport.’
The airport station is the final link in the ‘third stage’ of the Metro system’s development. The latest extension of the driverless system includes five new stations on the island of Amager.
With its completion, the Metro now runs from Vanløse station northwest of the city to Amager’s Christianshavn district, where it splits into two lines - one continuing on to the western part of Amager and the other now stretching all the way to Kastrup Airport.
The national government and the city councils in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg reached an agreement last year to extend the system with a ring line that would provide service to most of the city areas currently without a stop.
The airport station is the final link in the ‘third stage’ of the Metro network’s development. The third stage cost DKK 1.7 billion (EUR 227 million) and took four years to complete.
The Ørestad Development Corporation received good financial news earlier in the week, when its first quarter report showed that the Metro turned a profit for the first time since it began operation.
Crown Prince Frederik will officially open the new airport Metro station, cutting the ribbon during the inauguration ceremony.
